UK car finance market context

A simple look at the market signals and agreement figures worth checking before you choose a car finance route.

General information only. Last reviewed: July 2026.

This guide is designed to help you understand the figures that can affect a car finance agreement. It is not personal financial advice. Finance is subject to status, affordability and lender criteria.

How UK drivers commonly fund cars

Many UK drivers spread the cost of a car rather than paying the full price upfront. PCP and Hire Purchase are two familiar routes, but the suitable option depends on deposit, mileage, vehicle age, expected ownership length and how much flexibility you want at the end.

PCP versus Hire Purchase

PCP can reduce the monthly payment compared with an equivalent HP agreement by deferring part of the cost into an optional final payment. Hire Purchase may be more straightforward if your priority is owning the car at the end with no mileage agreement or balloon payment. For a fuller comparison, read our PCP vs HP guide.

The shift towards electric and hybrid

Electric and hybrid vehicles can behave differently in finance calculations because residual value, battery condition, mileage and charging habits matter. Comparing selected lenders can help show how different structures reflect the car, the deposit and the term.

Where to check current market figures

Car finance statistics change regularly, so fixed figures can become out of date quickly. For current market data, check sources such as the Finance & Leasing Association, the Financial Conduct Authority and the Office for National Statistics. Treat market averages as context only, not as a guide to the rate, product or acceptance decision you may receive.

What it means for you

Market averages are useful context, but your own agreement is what matters. Compare the monthly payment, total amount payable, deposit, mileage assumptions and end of term options before you commit. You can also compare the main finance options before making an enquiry.
